Forbidden City
The Forbidden City, known
in Chinese word as Gugong, used to be imperial palace
of the Ming and Qing dynasty. It is located in the heart
of Beijing, measuring 753meters from the west to the
east, 961meters from the north to the south with an
area of 720,000 square meters.
The Forbidden City mainly consists
of two sections: the Inner Court and the Outer Court.
The Inner Court is where the emperor, his concubines
and eunuch lived. In all, 14 emperors of Qing dynasty
and 10 emperors of Ming once lived there. So it is also
called Living Quarters. The outer Count is a place where
official business was done. Important ceremonies also
took place here.
The Forbidden City is the largest
building complex in the world. Accordingly, its construction
is significant in the world history. Started in 1407
in the Ming dynasty and finished in 1420, the project
took almost 14 years. According to historians, a large
number of laborers were driven to work on the enormous
complicated construction.
Today The Forbidden City has become
a famous scenic spot worldwide. It attracts numerous
visitors from home and abroad every year.
