Tian'anmen Square: The heart of urban Beijing and large enough to accommodate an assembly of one million people. It stands in front of the Forbidden City, at its north the Tiananmen Rostrum, from which imperial decrees were promulgated.
Forbidden City: Known as the Imperial Palace Museum or Gugong, the Forbidden City was the place where the emperors of the Ming and Qing Dynasties carried out their administration and lived. Now it is open to the public as a palace museum where people can see the great traditional palace architecture, enjoy the treasures kept in the palace, and learn of the legends and anecdotes about the imperial family and the court.
Summer Palace: The Summer Palace is a favorite among tourists sightseeing in Beijing. Indeed, it is one of the best parks in the city. Originally it was a retreat for emperors to escape the scorching summer heat of Beijing. The Summer Palace was used by emperors for 800 years, but fell into disuse in the 18th century. Then in the 19th century, the Empress Dowager Cixi made massive renovations and restored many buildings using money funneled out from the state treasury.
Temple of Heaven: The Temple of Heaven, completed in 1420 during the reign of Ming Emperor Yongle, originally served as the most sacred space in which the emperor (the Son of Heaven) would perform the most important sacrifices and rites. The gods of earth, water, war, and civilian affairs were all honored, but it was the god of agriculture who received special attention. On the winter solstice, the emperor, after ritual fasts and purification, would beseech Heaven for bountiful harvests. The temple's layout reflects the Confucian/Daoist worldview that anchored the imperial order, with the square bases of the circular temples articulating the relationship between Earth and Heaven - the emperor serving as intermediary, administering human affairs on behalf of the divine order. The most distinctive temple in the complex, and one of the most famous buildings in China, not to mention the world, is the Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests.
